Toward the Development of a Competency Model of Family Firm Leadership

This paper describes an exploratory study using a modified competency profiling methodology (1) to study effective leadership in a sample of high functioning family businesses. Competency modeling links leadership behavior, self-concept and motivation to empirically successful firm outcomes. The five leaders or leadership teams interviewed in the study exhibited similarities across six competency themes. These competency themes suggest a comprehensive model of effective family business leadership. The competency perspective appears to be useful for both further, more generalizable, research on family business leadership, as well as in the practice areas of leadership development and career planning.
